The documentary beautifully details the intensity and resilience of Japanese culture in a way that feels on par with Jiro Dreams of Sushi. The subject could very well be the real life inspiration for both The Truman Show and Oldboy. However, rather than Oh Dae-su, Nabusu follows in Truman’s steps and becomes a shining example of the best human qualities. It could be a better documentary but the story/subject is unbeatable.

Beyond Utopia 2023
Beyond Utopia reminded me how crazy it is that the world just tolerates North Korea. Even crazier that we allow other countries like China, Laos, and Vietnam to enable human rights violations by knowingly sending back would be defectors to execution or disappearance into a Gulag. But it’s the most crazy that the only way out of North Korea relies on a 60 year old Christian pastor whose body is falling apart.

Can see how this hit different when it came out. Huge fan of the hallway scene, octopus scene, and suitcase scene. But something felt missing that I can’t quite put my finger on; almost like all the significant moments were accidental? The movie was about revenge but I felt like the most moving or interesting developments were more related to how a human deals with and responds to 15 years in captivity
