Grave of the Fireflies 1988
Studio Ghibli’s signature details elevate every scene of life in 40’s wartime Japan. The kid’s lives showed the cost of the war and how terrible it is to launch an assault on the civilian population. Merging Studio Ghibli’s penchant for magnifying the little things in life vs a stark juxtaposition to the desolation of a real life event made for a truly effective story.

Companion 2025
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Personally, going in blind I expected this movie to be about why the robot went nuts and then killed everyone out of jealousy but then Stepford Wives crept up on it. I’m not sure what these stories are missing though, like we need to go further into what part misogyny plays and not just veiled attempts to shame people who like to control others. But I like that this film gets close to Spike Jonze’s Her.

Past Lives 2023
This story exudes a form of missed connection romance I think is too often missing from media and is handled in an amazing way. The fact that you can have a connection with someone that’s both special but also never materializes is painful but important to highlight. Sometimes The Notebook is just fantasy and that one person never gets their chance again.
