King uses a blend of the supernatural with true human empathy to explore the complexities of human interaction. Existential themes such as condemnation, redemption, love, trauma, and forgiveness are played out in this beautifully paced 3hr movie. Chaplin continues to surprise me. Dressed in amazing practical effects and covered with some humor, The Gold Rush (1925) is probably his most bleak film. Chaplin uses literary-styled scenes, metaphors and a subversion of most writing conventions to build a truly isolating story about a man who wants so badly to be loved. The film drags us through isolation, love, self-deception and the hollowness that can begin in the pursuit of pleasure
I wanted to like this movie…
Between the melodramatic opening, shaky camera work, and lack of depth or growth in some of the characters I just felt like it fell flat
