An absolute abomination I’m afraid. Where to start?

Story wise it was all over the place. Tried to do too many things at once that resulted in a disjointed final act.

Cast wise only Pedro Pascal and Joseph Quinn came out of that with any applause from me. Denzel Washington felt like he was playing himself which seems out of place for a fictional/historical drama.

The lead actor Paul Mescal was disappointing from start to finish, lacking any conviction in the delivery of his lines.

The less said about the battle sequences the better.

First hour or so thought it was paced nicely. Had the hallmarks of a typical “Alien” film. The lead actress put in a strong performance. However, the supporting cast fell just short of matching her.

The special effects on the whole were well done, but let down in the end by a certain CGI reimagining of a character from the first film that bordered on being cartoonish.

The story which started out strong lost its way in the end, especially when the last twenty minutes felt like a homage to Aliens, Alien 3 and Ressurection crammed in unnecessarily.

Wasn’t a fan of Eggers’ previous work The Lighthouse, but thoroughly enjoyed his version of Nosferatu. Had elements of early Hammer Horror films, especially the Christopher Lee Dracula films which surprised me. Cast performances were top notch, especially Lily Rose Depp and Bill Skarsgaad.

Felt like a classic horror film that didn’t have to solely depend on grisly and gruesome sequences to provide the fear factor. Definitely glad I saw it on the big screen.
