Entertaining at times but mostly a little flat. Thought-provoking but weak. Funny in parts yet kind of lame.
It's enjoyable, but you look at the cast and can't help but feel disappointed overall. The film feels purposely aware of itself, its irony... but obnoxiously so.
Worth the watch for the performances and thoughts.
Something didn’t hit. And I couldn’t be more deflated with it being my first Tarkovsky film. I had such high hopes and, in part, through some of the discourse, camera work and a forced contemplation, some of those hopes were fulfilled. But not to the level I anticipated. Perhaps that is part of the issue..all that I’ve read and heard beforehand. It’s just that the journey, the characters, the elusiveness as opposed to mystery, left me uneasy. Almost too open…
A masterpiece. 1954. Grows on you with every single minute. All 207 of them culminating in something quite beautiful.
Appeals across the decades with a fine balance of humour, wisdom, storytelling and emotion. Pioneering cinema. Context is key. So much respect. Thank you Akira Kurosawa.
