A gripping and heart wrenching documentary of a dementia-addled Robert De Niro, who gives a biopic of his life believing that some of his most iconic movies like casino and goodfellas actually happened earlier in his life.
The conflicted director Martin Scorsese works through his own guilt of setting these delusions in motion, portraying himself in several characters as the force that persuades Robert De Niro’s character to continuously become more involved in the mafia.
The movie leaves us with the complex interior of delusion, at a time when the mafia, just like Robert De Niro’s mind, is fading away into pure fantasy
