A fun film that builds suspense by placing seemingly naive characters at the hands of a strange and eccentric man. The film uses Mormonism as a backdrop of innocence with Grants character acting as the philistine foil. Grants acting performance is quite strong, the dialogue is interesting but does tend to drag and fall into cliche.
Ralph Fiennes proves once again why he is considered one of the world’s best actors. The film is driven by the strong performances of Fiennes and Tucci, who are well complimented by the supporting cast. I found the most interesting part of the film to be the internal struggle of Fiennes character between spirituality and ego. As a cardinal you would expect him to be a pious man, but it appears his self doubt causes him to question his commitment to God. As he gains popularity he gains confidence and is pulled deeper into the story. 4.5 stars one of the best films of the year.
Skarsgaard shines in a gothic rethink of Bram Stokers Dracula. The set, character, and costume design are all excellent and create a horrifying atmosphere that unnerves you as you watch. The only drawback of the film is the static characters most of whom do not develop from the 2D persona introduced in the first five minutes of the film.
