"He thought that it is more difficult to pretend that you do have feelings when you don't than to pretend you don't have feelings when you do."
"There is blood and biscuits everywhere."

a fun, cynical take on relationships that questions how people can become so pedantic in getting themselves into relationships and ultimately lose themselves in the process. the beautiful fantasies we are fed about love are not without sacrifices and consequences -- ones we tend to ignore, conditioned…

hypnotically disorienting even though time, paradoxically, exists to orient us along one axis of our world... to be in a liminal space like a movie theatre, still anchored to the real world by the film itself with its on-screen clocks matching the actual time, yet any slipping into comfort, into narrative, constantly interrupted by the shifting scenes, genres, and moods

*will note i did not watch this film in its entirety at all either time i've sat in on this film at the MoMA (first time dec 2012 + this time was at the MoMA march party)

i lost it when nicole scherzinger unironically hit the hype/shoot dance move (as popularized in the modern day by fortnite)

wonderful use of a minimal set. that camera rig + live feed media screen set up was 🤌🏼 as it evokes the black and white silent films that norma desmond would have originally acted in when she was in her prime.

intrigued by the relationship parallels of norma + joe gillis vs. joe + betty schaefer, not just partner dynamic, but expectations and aspirations (hopeful naïveté? jaded? or realistic?) from their careers.
