There's no logic behind my ratings. I don't know what's going on. I LOVE everything above 3.5 though.

Second viewing the day after the first one.
I could go for a third time. Some scenes worked even better - especially the dinner scene and the final monologue in the snow (something I was not as big on the first viewing).
The tape recordings in the car scenes worked better too. Could it be a little on the nose? With the text of Uncle Vanya corresponding to the protagonist’s mental state? Perhaps. But this time around, I realized the intertextuality…

The final Uncle Vanya speech is one of the most moving experiences I’ve had in a cinema - if not the most.
I was working on a theory that a film doesn’t work for me if the act structure is too obvious - this film shattered that theory. Well, I probably should’ve known (Fanny and Alexander is my favorite film after all).
Anyways, I love this. The reserved acting, the tension, the slow and controlled way it reveals its mysteries.
Love the exploration of acting, of language (and how that ties into the theme of communication), of family, of love.
