River is a much more ambitious film than its predecessor, 2020's Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes, and it certainly pays off in the beautifully executed long shots. However the film's story attempting much more than the previous one makes it stumble in parts. Overall I think the much more comedy-driven BtITW certainly succeeds at what it tries to do more, but River is a promising showcase of what the director and crew may be able to do in future films.

Osgood Perkins is one of the greatest voices currently directing horror films, but I think he should leave writing scripts to somebody else. The film gets by mostly by incredible use of filmmaking, truly making you dread every second of the film goes on. It may make you scared, it may make you sad, it may make you upset, but I think evoking such strong emotions through sheer directing is why I love the film

A true exploitation film, Ms .45 shows its hand all too well when the two consecutive rape scenes are shown in much more detail than the heroine getting revenge for them. Genuinely baffling, it feels as though half-way through the film changes tone and direction completely, from a dour drama of a woman dealing with trauma to a silly Cannon-style action flick. I would love to have laughed at the absurdity of the later scenes, but the murky tone and tackling of dark topics in the first half kept me feeling down.

This is a film I thought I could just picture in my head from the synopsis and not have to bother, and boy was I wrong. The film takes you on an incredibly fun adventure of twists and turns, that even with a relative short runtime still feels like it overstays its welcome a little bit.
