Solid from start to finish. The heavily stylized portions aren’t the best the 80s had to offer, but otherwise had great dialogue, cinematography, and acting. The pacing got a little slow once they introduced the killer, but evened out in the end. Hard to believe Mann could put it together.
Quick thoughts:
Wanted to like this more than I did upon first viewing. The aesthetics and mood are well executed, along with the dialogue and performances turned in by all the players. This movie has a strong first 3/4s, with a slightly diminished last quarter which I personally found quite disturbing. The emphasis on demonic activity was uncomfortable for me to watch.
Nicholas Cage pulls off what might be his best performance.
I’d rate this higher but feel obligated to keep my current rating with how disturbing the content is.
This film was incredibly frustrating to watch. The creative choices with some of the scenes were either poorly conceived, poorly executed, or sometimes completely unnecessary.
Driver and Cruz’s performances were decent enough to carry the story (Driver being really the only redeeming component to this film).
The sound mixing mediocre except during the race scenes. The dialogue was exceptionally “Nolan-level” at times making viewing quite difficult and hard to understand.
Editing was amateur. Why the hell does the shot linger…
Ridley’s first enjoyable and relatable performance I’ve watched. A simplistic, quirky indie film with an interesting color palette and shot composition that works really well at times and not so well at others. Overall, I liked the film.
