I deliberately avoided reviews before I watched this, and I’m so glad I did. Coming at the movie cold allows you to let the images and sounds power into you in the most visceral way. The movie centres on the ethics of photo journalism, and in my view much less so on the picturing of modern America as a place where the Don’s hucksterism has led the great republic to its inevitable, frightening end point of violence and destruction.

An extraordinary warm and intelligent film, my originally giving it four and a half stars was probably more to do with the limitations of the Letterboxd scoring system … The Incredibles, for example, is a more complete film and deserves top marks, but Ratatouille would probably be 9.9 out of ten. It’s weird writing these reviews, because there’s a ton of very erudite cultural analysis out there on these epoch-making movies written by much better-informed people than me. Can I have a valid view if it’s impressionistic and not in line with the accepted wisdom that has developed over 45 years?
