The Way of the Gun 2000
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Christopher McQuarrie’s first film as a director feels so abrupt in scope, that its ultraviolence is even more jarring than ultraviolenter movies. Nearly nonexistent depth of character. Overly limited exposition. And some eye-roll-worthy attempts at shock value. And it works, dammit.
Best line of McQuarrie’s screenplay belongs to Abner Mercer as he sits dying in his car: “If it's not too much trouble, I'd kind of like to be alone.”

Maybe the best adapted screenplay ever. But it did take me a whole week to nickel and dime my way through it. It’s so evenly and theatrically paced and organized, with pitch-perfect flashbacks that evoke the purest forms of frustration, sympathy, and inevitably inspiration. The extremely drawn-out penultimate scene where the bureaucrats drunkenly stumble into the protagonist’s legacy powerfully reveals the main theme of the movie—one person’s life is so valuable and redeemable, no matter how old, irrelevant, or useless they’ve been up to a defining moment of action.
Dammit, I swear I’m gonna get my novel published because I watched this movie.
