My issue with the extended cuts of all three installments is that - while the added scenes are mostly fun, and some seem crucial to the story once you’ve seen them (the lack of Saruman’s death in the theatrical cut makes it seem like Saruman and Wormtongue just disappear into thin air) - the extra footage often disrupts the excellent pacing of the theatrical cuts, which hurts twice as bad given the saga’s monumental runtime of over 11 hours.

The story meanders so much I didn’t care what was going to happen next for a single second. Nothing about this film justifies its lengthy runtime. There are some scenes and performances (especially Brad Pitt’s) that work great on their own, but they don’t really work together as a movie.
