Incredible filmmaking, informative and a visual treat with distinctive graphics, phenomenal archival footage, and enlightening interviews. The politics are unreliable but come as no real surprise given the time frame. I can also highly fucking highly recommend this as something to fall asleep to.

They really stop and I do mean STOP in the middle of their godamn tracks when they return to being blockbusters after having spent a solid chunk of runtime shapeshifting as decent movies.

I find it pretty reductionist that one of the most popular reviews of this film accuses Chris Marker of misogynist fetishism. The Tokyo Olympics of 1964 were for many the first exposure to a non-enemy Japan, so a film made concurrently cannot be viewed as yet another in a long line of anything, it would be a new thing regardless. Secondly, it's obvious with Sans Soleil that Marker's fascination with Japan ran much deeper than mere libido.

I hesitate to give 5 stars but films' with this much imagination get no less. Georges Méliès would have been proud
