  An unsettling, bizarre, bleak, mesmerizing, mysterious, existentialist, erotic, and seductive slow-burn with long stretches of silence and very little dialog. If you're someone who requires everything to be explained and you don't appreciate a slow, steady, and methodical film - avoid this movie at all costs. If you aren't and that string of adjectives above appeals to you, I strongly encourage you to give this film a shot.

  The cinematography was phenomenal. The sets were amazing. The costumes were gorgeous. Shima Iwashita's acting was impressive. The story was somewhat hard to follow at times due to how much it relates back to Japanese norms and culture of the 18th century, but I was able to follow it well enough. The movie was visually appealing and stylish enough to get a 4-star rating by itself. Especially when combined with Shima Iwashita's acting - I won't soon forget this film, and will certainly revisit it again in the future.
