I can really admire first-time director Mark Anthony Green going for something so strange and thematically ambitious with his first outing, but this movie — aside from the always-great Ayo Edibiri and a few moments of grisly violence — just never takes off.
It’s “Get Out” by way of “Midsommar” without the clever humor of the former or creeping dread of the latter. John Malkovich is painfully miscast, and the first two acts are just a lot of dead air until we get to the inevitable revelation that Things Are Not As They Seem at this cultish compound. Bummer!
