Looks like I will be a big defender of this film. It’s kinda awkward, it’s put together in an unorthodox way, and its politics are hopeful, but I’m completely on board with it. There’s also a lot more here than just a strictly political critique. The central romance is strong and Pattinson carries the film with his portrayal of a character that is actually quite captivating. The denouement the second time around really solidified this for me. This was pretty good, though the level of craft displayed throughout makes you wish it had coalesced into something truly great in the end. Instead it remains scattered and leaves a bit of a bitter aftertaste from its easy-breezy conclusion, which doesn’t feel commensurate with what came before.
