Very slow burn of a movie following the day to day life of a toilet cleaner in Tokyo. Started off watching thinking something drastic will happen but nah it’s just the main character’s daily routine. There’s something relaxing and cathartic about this film the more I watched that I was fully engrossed in his life by the end of it. And I think that’s the beauty of this movie. Overall it’s the same but each day was slightly different and the main character was content.

First time I watched this I was having a panic attack in the theatre from trying weed gummies so I didn’t remember much. Second time was a few days later in a calmer state. Now I watched this a third time but the Japanese dub version since it was on Japanese TV. Same story, but it’s interesting to find subtle differences between the original US English version and the Japanese dub. Like most of the songs are also in Japanese. The “Japanese” characters (red panda idols?) actually speak English to maintain the foreignness in the Japanese dub.

Never watched a Gundam film/show before, never made a Gundam before, didn’t even know Gundam was an acronym, but when I saw that it was newly released in Japan I figured now was the time to watch one and boy was it a ride. I didn’t know what was going on in the first half but the second half was a mega mecha showdown. Who knew the power of love can start and end wars. Also that main chick was needlessly voluptuous.

Ainu culture and the Russo-Japanese War era are two themes that aren’t portrayed much in media so I was stoked to watch this film not realizing it’s a live action version of a manga.

The action and violence are thus manga-like and sometimes over the top (which I’m not a big fan of but would tolerate knowing the source material), but overall thought it was an intriguing and fascinating film incorporating the vastness of Hokkaido, history, and Ainu. Can’t wait for part 2.
