Painfully accurate. Down to the details of middle school, the portrayal of Asian family dynamics at the age of the title character, and even the mid 2000s aesthetic. This really hits close to home. A truly fantastic full length debut for director Sean Wang.

I didn't know a movie could be so wholesome and sad at the same time. Each of the three leads complement each other, having their own individual moments to showcase emotional weight to their characters. The visual aesthetic of the 1970s is especially well-done.

I don't know how it took me so long to finally get around to this. Morgan Freeman in particular stands out amongst the cast and carries the film, while Tim Robbins gives a more subdued performance appropriate for the challenges his character faces. Compelling and engrossing, Shawshank is a masterpiece in storytelling; showing how even in one's darkest moments, it is still better to have hope to overcome struggle.

While its material and 3.5 hour runtime are intimidating, it is constantly gripping. Each of the main cast is absolutely incredible. DiCaprio continues to give another career defining performance showing a man who is gullible and manipulated. Gladstone presents the soul of the film as an indigenous woman who continues to lose her family. DeNiro delivers as a representation of pure evil. There is a lot to digest and by the end of it, you are left defeated through all of the emotional exhaustion Scorsese presents you with, which is also why it needs to be experienced and is one of the best films of 2023.
