Whatever was happening in 1995-1998 japan with lain, NGE, ghost in the shell they were fuckin tripping on technology. and what a wild trip it was. techno-religious-freudian plots as a heavily veiled metaphor for lost human connection are badass.
my favourite theory from reddit: lain is an AGI that wants to know what it is like to live as a human, and in order to do that she must forget that she is an AGI.
