Greta Gerwig, as in her previous films, sets out to make a point in Barbie. And she has no scruples, perhaps to the point of detriment, in doing so, both implicitly and explicitly.
Gerwig recognises and portrays shrewdly the promise and constraint of Barbie. The homage to Kubrick and Space Odyssey is not only satisfying for a lover of the latter, but it also highlights effectively the duality of Barbie: an idol who revolutionised the vision and vibrancy of girls…
Some of the most beautiful sets I’ve seen yet - despite most scenes being interesting - it does end up feeling exceedingly long. Perhaps the beginning could have been shortened a bit, indeed the love interest never quite came full circle, at least for me. Nevertheless, Kubrick’s attention to detail is as present and impressive as ever
