Just watched this in preparation for “The Penguin” series, and was pleasantly surprised by the beautiful cinematography. The incorporation of water/rain as a motif for Robert Pattinson’s character was a nice touch as well, and allowed for some artsy shots of Gotham’s surroundings when drowned in water. The story that Chen Kaige portrays in this film is a rich and textured period piece set during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. In addition to having a stunning score, the film's lighting choices are outstanding and often accentuate the main character's emotions in the scenes. The cinematography is very crisp and fluid, often moving about the settings in a way that incorporates the audience into the different moods of the movie.
