Tarkovsky shot it just like a dream, fragmented, where a mother who's still young and beautiful suddenly turns into strange people you met only once as a guest in your house. And then the dream ends, leaving you crushed by the weight of consequences for things you didn’t really do, yet somehow everything still ended up this way.
