Brutal film. The Eastern front of WW2 was arguably the most important fight in the war, and pockets of Russian and Cossack resistance turned the tide decisively. The story of a boy who loses his village to a barn set on fire by SS commanders opens our eyes to the ludicrous nation-hierarchy proposed by the Nazis and how it fell to pieces. The last scene is a rewind of history in black and white, and brings the young boy back to the root of what differentiates hatred from compassion.
