David Macaulay: Cathedral 1986
It's a (somewhat embellished) historical retelling of the construction of the Notre-Dame de Paris. I love dry PBS documentaries so I've had this on my list for a bit.
The best part, though, is the crazy amount of work they put into the art direction & hand-drawn animation. Stylistically, it's a bit like the cutscenes in the CD-i Zelda games but with a way bigger budget and played straight.

Suffocatingly dark & creepy. The first scenes with Orlok and the ending are really sticking with me. People going on about the boring palette - did you really go into this expecting vivid hues?
My only mark against (or for?) it is just how referential it all is. It's pretty much Coppola's Dracula mixed really well with Herzog's Nosferatu but with a new visual approach, so there were few surprises for me but Claire really enjoyed it and we had a lot to talk about after.
Great performances! Lily defied my expectations and I love Skarsgård as a monster actor. He's UNRECOGNIZABLE.

For me, the usual thing tends to be "once I've seen the monster and know what it does I'm not scared anymore" and this definitely happens here, so after the initial kill scene and the cage scene, it lost what made it scary for me, but it was a lot of fun and made me laugh and the ending was actually kinda sad in a Mama (2013) sort of way.
