coming from the director who championed films from the likes of The Host to Snowpiercer to Parasite, we all pretty much know what we’re in for going to a new bong joon-ho feature, but he still manages to prove that wrong time and time again, with mickey 17 being the latest evidence of this.
clear and recognizable staples, tricks, and messages stand out across and throughout bong’s works, and he’s reached soaring heights in the past decade to establish a…

    The Others

brilliantly magical and disturbingly agonizing. plays it safe at the cost of characterization and falls short on the delivered intensity of mystique with easily spottable twists, but still supplies a riveting and decently fleshed out experience from the jump and sees it thru to the end. doesnt waste any time overstaying exposition and evenly layers plot elements smoothly and perceptively, though perhaps sometimes a little too transparently on the nose. acted and performed with sumptuous dedication, the film tends to…

some of the more iconic deaths in horror as paralleled to the more drawn out calculatedly sadistic traps of Saw, FD3 operates on curses and fate as always, while shining brighter than its predecessors and providing a flawed but wickedly entertaining ride for gore enthusiasts and fans of creeping anxiety/dread. exudes hilarious/cringe 2000s nostalgia bait in the form of a fun but silly script, led to victory by mary elizabeth winstead’s charming performance. with the signature grimy visuals and cool tones of zapped color permeating the atmosphere, here we arrive at a solid cult classic horror film worth a rewatch or two or three

    Oddity

    ★★★½

thoroughly frightening and frigid, a shudder original that entrances and beckons deeper into the depths, oddity is an almost fully realized horror that falls short in its conclusion but has a lot of visionary potential. shot beautifully, and hypnotically utilizing empty space and silence with deft precision, its clear mood and ambience were a main focus here, and its done well enough to make up for the films shortcomings in the form of rushed plot developments and unexplored genre motifs. still downright haunting and morbidly satisfying, and a movie i wont stop thinking about for a while
