The Milk of Sorrow 2009
Now that I’ve watched more movies in Spanish, I’ve noticed the stereotype in Latin-American cinema that depicts indigenous women as passive, inert and perpetually timid. I’m afraid the premise of this movie made evading that stereotype mostly impossible. Nonetheless, after my first watch, I think it’s a visually stunning film with great performances. While I believe its response to Peruvian women is metaphorically effective on paper, I do think its execution was a little crude or reductive at times. Over-all, this was a beautiful film, and I hope it helps advance the stories of Peruvian women as victims of wartime.
