definitely one of my favorite horror movies of the last couple of years. beautiful cinematography, great acting and a creative story that combines the usual „haunted family“ storyline with a gutwrenching sociocritical layer.
while everybody might not like the use of jumpscares and visual effects, i really enjoyed that the movie went all out on these in addition to the constant atmosphere of real life danger the family has to face in their new life. kinda reminded me of Hereditary…

while Lovecrafts original story relies on suggestive descriptions of something unimaginable to convey its horror, this film goes the visual route with sometimes crappy CGI and unnecessary yet at times unnerving creature horror, thereby completely missing the authors punchline (that whole “fear of the unknown” thing). If you want to see a good psychedelic horror movie starring Nicholas Cage, just watch Mandy and skip this one.
