i found tár to be convoluted, lengthy, and challenging. many of the scenes were boring and gratuitous and added nothing, not even character development, to the already confusing narrative. some of the dialogue were riddled with niche references and unnecessary details, making it feel inaccessible to the average viewer. however, cate blanchett’s performance was riveting — she brilliantly portrayed tár’s genius, hubris, and madness with such ease and carried the rise and the fall of the character despite the lack of support from the plot line itself. at its best, tár conceptualizes the gold standard for a challenging yet captivating character study.
