  I'm starting to think he can never replicate what made the VVitch work so well despite the problems it has that all of his works have. I just think Eggers' direction at the moment doesn't work for stories with a larger scale than that movie or the Lighthouse in general, which is why he's struggled on this and the Northman.   still his best work imo, maybe nosferatu will change that. the dread this film builds up and the last 20 minutes perfectly pays off for it, one of my few major criticisms of eggers as a filmmaker is that his pay off doesn't always match the build up which leaves the film feeling kind of underwhelming, lighthouse has this to a small extent and also northman (I didn't care about the build up either in this case). but this movie doesn't struggle with that whatsoever, it's also anya's best performance yet asides maybe queen's gambit.
