    Giamatti is as expected, which is to say grumpy and great, but this came off to me as a standard, made-for-Oscars, slice-of-life flick. Perfectly adequate as intended, and some heartstrings were indeed pulled, but it didn't get at any unusual heartstrings or show me anything new. These movies aren't my cup of tea to begin with, so maybe add a star for that. It's an inoffensive movie.

    I wanted and expected it to be a lot better than it is. It's just a really strange film that, imo, didn't express its points very well. I am pro-Jesus, but I don't think I was particularly offended by it. It just confused me. It's a bizarre mix of subversive, reverent, and minimalist. Willem is incredible - that goes without saying.     A 3.5/5 (or 8/10 on the more generous 10-point scale), well-made but unremarkable Coen Bros movie, just like the rest of them. I swear to God, I threw this on not knowing who made it, and in the middle I thought, "Hmm, this is pleasant enough and competently made, but I don't care about anything this movie is doing or trying to say to me. Reminds me of the Coen Bros..." Lo and behold, I see the credits and snort to myself. They've done it again. Another inoffensive but utterly inconsequential film.
