  I really wanted to love this, but I can't.

  We have plenty of war-is-hell movies out there, and I think what makes Remarque's novel so poignant is not the comprehensive portrayal of barbarity that the movie seems to aim for, but the hopelessness of a return to normalcy after having suffered, and most importantly, inflicted a degree of violence that can never be reconciled with a return home.
