The Letter 1998
This movie is crisp and stark and sweet. I think of it every New Year’s Eve, without fail.

Small Deaths 1996
I remember (fondly, now) being in my short film class and forced to watch these sequentially. Upon first viewing I knew I loved the series and I knew it was important, but I had a hard time grasping why since surfacely the coarse accented language was so inaccesible to me—now I see this factor as one of its greatest attributes. Ghost World 2001
I remember watching this film when I was younger and being totally jealous of everything Enid was—nonchalant, the center of attention, earnestly nihilistic. Upon a recent rewatch I cannot even believe how much her character annoys me, and yet I guess it makes sense with how I feel about younger Yesi, too. Trying so hard to prove to the whole world that you’ve decided exactly how you feel about everything and everyone, but your true thoughts and feelings are constantly changing and totally ephemeral the moment you absorb new information. Cria! 1976
Ana Torrent is, as always, haunting and perfect. Geraldine Chaplin’s grasp of Spanish is beautiful and her performance totally encapsulates how the people we love appear to be, if only in our memory. The film in concept is a cousin to the effort of Spirit of the Beehive, with Ana at the center of grief and first-contact with death, but the pacing from Saura is completely deviant, and his style totally original and his own. Highly recommend for people who enjoy the spirit of surrealism while being tethered to a clear plot. Will be thinking about this for days to come.
