Bo Burnham’s Inside is definitely creative, but most of the humor feels like it’s coming from the perspective of an American white guy, which made it hard for me to relate. The film is mostly broken into sketch-like segments, and while a few of them stood out, overall, I didn’t find most of the songs that impressive. At times, it felt more like a high-budget YouTube video than a cohesive film. Thematically cool, but looking at the ratings, I can’t help but feel it’s a bit overrated.
This movie hits harder than any film could ever hit your heart. The last half hour relentlessly tries to make you cry rivers—and it succeeds. Beyond its emotional weight, it’s a film rich with imagery and open to deep discussions. The heavy Christ symbolism is front and center, yet this might be one of the least intrusive examples of it in cinema. It’s one of those rare movies that make you truly reflect on the necessity of the death penalty.…
