    It’s not THAT bad.

Sure I can see why it hasn’t scored very well, but I would be lying if I say I didn’t enjoy it.

It’s faults aside I’d rather focus on what it does well and I must give this film credit for it moving away from some of the more egregious horror film tropes. For example, this film gives the viewer a compelling reason to why the family have decided to move house. Which is far superior…

This should have been bad. Even excusing the fact it’s a “video game movie”, it should have been bad. But it just isn’t.

It enters the family film arena and leaves triumphant after juggling the classic; ‘this joke is for those parents who have to sit through this with their kids.’ As this film is equal parts funny as the main character is fast. I’m under no allusion that this is some hidden piece of cinematic mastery. But one thing Speed Racer does well is... Speed. (yeah, ha ha) But many films have fast elements, and yet, many films fail at capturing the essence of going quickly. It’s almost commonplace to see speed portrayed as ‘time in a bottle’ moments where all other characters crawl to a standstill with the main character just nonchalantly wondering around them, causing chaos, rather than displaying unfathomable pace. Megamind

    ★★★★

Megamind is a subversive masterclass. It deftly tackles the nature vs nurture debate within a backdrop of superhero shenanigans and zingers. With comedy chops that are dumb enough for kids and smart anough for adults, there's a little bit of everything in here. This film was unfortunately cursed to be released in a time of Minons and Despicable Me's left to be criminally overlooked. At least we've got memes to resurrect this forgotten gem.

Overall, about as good as Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty.
