Conceptually lake mungo should work, a mockumentary mystery horror tackling trauma and grief as secrets are unveiled and dark truths revealed. Unfortunately, when the documentary aspect is dull in presentation with a collection of expository close ups, as well and painfully slow grainy zoom ins as the audio raises, the whole features become a heavy drag.
Part of me feels as if this is a parody of horror adjacent myth focused documentaries, such as Bigfoot, with the amount of stretching…
An interesting hybrid of Jackie chan directed stun work/humour, and the more traditional narrative focus of Stanly Tong. This makes Super cop the most interesting of the trilogy in plot, but lackluster to a degree with the humour and action as it is spread out with less focus or flair.
It’s symbolic that Jackie’s “final” Hong Kong film before “going Hollywood” is also his best.
Many a Jackie film has balanced consistent humour with PERFECT action sequences, e.g. Project A, but here we see a comprehensive (Somewhat thin) plot throughout which showcases a level of acting and characterisation rarely seen his features. Truly a near perfect film easily an all timer in genre with endless rewatch ability as it leaves you gasping for oxygen in laughter and shock with the punishment taken from Jackie.
Some genuinely decent set up, despite a weird amount of lazy coincidences pushing the narrative, is made with a cast of characters less explored in the film setting….that is until Broly and Gohan are thrusted in to sell the feature halfway in. A decently enjoyable time given the usual short length and quality of action.
