First off, I find it crazy that they actually snuck over to the Eastern side of the wall for that one shot.

Of films I've been assigned viewing in uni courses so far this one has been one of my favourites. Beautiful cinematography, gorgeous poetic moments, Nick Cave concert footage for some reason? Okay, that's cool. Put this one higher up just for that. Otherwise, a lot of it is waxing on philosophical, which I'm sure me in 1st year…

The actors in this movie were just too pretty. For an indie movie, this film has way too many Hollywoodisms to make it feel as authentic as the novel did, and many of the rough edges were smoothed out in a story where the characters are supposed to be gnarly in a rugged, unforgiving setting. Everybody who sees this: Write an email to [email protected] and tell them to add this movie to the Criterion collection. I literally had to go to some website called rarefilms because it was the only place I could watch it.

Some jaw-dropping gorgeous cinematography, but it is a difficult watch. 3 hours and 40 minutes is very demanding, but throughout the film they do a good job of portraying the effects of trauma. Sad and difficult, but definitely worth a watch.
