Underdog protagonist destroying the corrupt authority forces with the help of the trans community and a sex worker, I think this is all I wanted in a movie. (and from Sanji's timeskip arc in One Piece) Really cool and thrilling action choreography! The exposition was a bit slow, and I do think there was unused potential in some of the characters and storylines, but I look forward to more of Dev Patel's films!

The Wailing 2016
Watching this back-to-back right after Memories of a Murder was wild, though the similarities start waning off after the first 30 minutes (small town homicide investigations with incompetent police investigators). About two-thirds in, as I sat in confusion unsure who to root for and every character was suffering, I felt like I was just suffering too.
But by the end of the movie, I felt interested in the way it concluded, and in the director's purpose in creating the film!! I also found the overlap of multiple types of spirituality to be interesting as well.Translated from by

Memories of Murder 2003
Glad to watch another Bong Joon Ho film, though it felt different than what I was used to seeing in his other works. His fictionalized take on true crime felt like respectful in a way I haven't seen in other true crime media, where it really highlighted the helplessness and desperation in the investigators.
I enjoyed the contrast of the small town vs big city detective, how the storytelling started us off with common tropes of each, yet bringing them to equal footing by the end of the movie.Translated from by -

1.5/5 for a regular movie, 3.5/5 for a Christmas movie! it was fun to see that they tried slipping in some light horror moments, and the other romantic subplots were entertaining. suchh a missed opportunity to absolutely lean into the period romance with the ghost though and make him much more Mr. Darcy-like— not just standoffish, but *also* awkward !!
