Feels super prescient to U.S. support of the Mujahedeen during the cold war and subsequent blowback, despite the books being written a decade earlier.

Folk horror, but draws from spaghetti western, gangster and samurai flick tropes. Genre-bending feels stylish and effortless. I couldn't get ahead of the plot but didn't feel baffled. Woke up the next day needing to learn more about Senegalese mythology.
Budget to slickness ratio is insane. Script has pulpy Tarantino cool-factor but without all the self-sucky character exposition that the Foot Goblin likes to indulge in.
