  The general description I knew about this movie didn’t prepare me literally at all. It’s so dark and raw in some moments, flat in others, but wholly a great representation of the way we mix tragedy and fame a little too seamlessly here in the West. Weird movements in pacing are thankfully saved by our great narrator and overlord Willem Dafoe, excellent choice to giving more insight into the protagonist’s rise to fame.   God this is such a perfect 80s movie. It has such a unique heart that sets it apart from the brat pack era. Cusack was such a coming-of-age underdog at this time, and the perfect choice to deliver such a genuine performance of of 19 year old with no interest in the future and just wants to spend his summer with the girl he loves.
