This is a pretty good movie - and as such it's infuriating to me how incredibly easily this could've been great. I don't think I've ever seen a film that tackles cosmic/Lovecraftian horror in a way that's this visceral, this direct and this authentic.

Richard Stanley's "Color out of Space" is yet another admirable but severely flawed attempt at translating the themes of cosmic horror and existential dread in HP Lovecraft's writings onto the big screen. Robert Eggers' "The Northman" is an ambitious love letter to Nordic mythology and Shakespearean theatre, but ultimately collapses under its own immense weight towards the end.
Not bad by any stretch of the imagination, and most of the times quite enjoyable, but never all that memorable and most certainly not the grand marble pillar of modern indie cinema that many hoped it would end up being.
