As a genre fan, the substance is a great body horror film. With references to the thing, re-animator, from beyond, society and basket case, it really has brought body horror to the 21st century. It’s an elevated 80s B movie vhs horror.
However, its feminist themes pale in its execution. It’s definitely no artsy fartsy film you would expect from mubi, but it’s an amazing horror film (so it averages out to be an okay movie)
