Made me nostalgic for the Golden Age of Hollywood as if I'd lived through it.
The set design in the big house was so so incredible, I spent half the time just trying to take in all the detail. Gloria Swanson is a true powerhouse who struck the perfect balance of neurotic and delusional yet sympathetic and somewhat admirable? You really can't blame a girl for wanting her close-up and *spoiler alert* she looked incredible when she got it, if not slightly deranged.
I can't wrap my head around how these films that consist entirely of people having conversations are so compelling but they just are.
Sean Baker never misses!!
Did not expect to hear Take That but I loved it. The dynamics between all the mismatched characters were perfection and so hilarious. A really fun film, with an underlying melancholy that provides depth and meaning. Baker magnifies a 'small' story in such great detail, with brilliant pacing and just some incredibly coordinated sequences.
I think I will continue to think about this film long after today. It's nice to see Yorgos returning to form a bit as it's an uncommon trajectory for directors following big successes.
I loved the uneasiness in this one coupled with beautiful, colourful cinematography that only made it more uncomfortable. Each story unfolded so incredibly, in a way that we'd never guess what would happen next but it made sense when it happened, no matter how twisted. I struggle…
