I prefer the Little Mermaid as the emotional highs and lows were more pronounced, and the songs are slightly worse in this movie.
It maintains that classic Disney magic which always works, and it fits nicely into that 90s Disney vibe.

I really don’t like action movies so this was a surprise.
It doesn’t take itself too seriously, and the comedic elements create a really good contrast with the more emotionally taxing scenes (which are handled thoughtfully and selectively.)
The musical elements were great. They advanced the plot, offered comedic relief (sometimes), and they are written well.

I read the book a couple years ago, so was very happy to see this on screen now. It’s an easy watch, and (just like the book) is very contained; with only a few characters and one overarching plot point. This makes Bates shine very brightly, and James Caan wasn’t bad either.
