Craig Brewer’s debut film, The Poor and Hungry, has no reason to be this damn good. After this viewing it is no shock to me that Brewer has gone on to have such a great career, because the guy clearly has IT. This movie is wildly entertaining despite the fact that it was made on a 20k budget, with no crew, no real actors, and over the course of like two or three years. It shows that all you need to make a truly good film is a story and a camera, any camera.
