    Chronopolis

    ★★★½

Chronopolis is one of those "oh yeah, it's cool" films where I'm not sure how many folks I can earnest recommend it too, lol

There's zero dialog. It has a narrative but not really much plot. You're here for the images and animation, which are very striking but also quite deliberately paced. I would not describe this as a "thrilling" watch.

But if you can vibe with what Chronopolis offers, then you're in for trippy watch with some very clever…

  • Wizardry

    Wizardry

    ★★

A short 50 minute OVA, Wizardry is a rough (and abridged) telling of the seminal 1981 video game's plot, as much as it had one.

The main interest in seeing it today is noting just how many of the genre staples were codified right from the start. Everything cliche from dungeoneering anime of the past 30 years, and like 80% of isekai by bulk (at least) is all here in this 50 minute feature. This was all old when Dragon…

    Shin Kamen Rider

    ★★★★★

A sad girl and her neuroatypical puppydog boyfriend share a nonsexual kink relationship in which they murder her friends and family.

Shin Kamen Rider is an atypically episodic movie. Each villainous "Aug" has it's own lair/arena. Ruriko acts as something like a fight promoter, bringing in Masked Rider as a contender while his ring music plays. The two of them are very weird people on a very weird vendetta and it's largely because of their unconventional relationship that the movies…

Holy Flame of the Martial World

    ★★★★

My latest watch of Holy Flame follows a watch of Zu: Warriors of the Magic Mountain, a similar film that was so mid it made me ask "wait, was Holy Flame actually good?"

Now that I have rewatched it: it was!

Two parents flee with their twin infants from a host of martial art academies, sect leaders, and rogue warriors who are all in pursuit of the eponymous Holy Flame, a legendary weapon whose mastery would lead to martial supremacy.…
