Early concerns about B & W signalling pretence were soon overcome. By the time of the Vashti Bunyan karaoke scene, totally  sold on this confident, singular debut. Forget about all the Jarmusch connections others are making, this is drawing from a deeper well.

Pretty much loathsome once the narrative intent becomes apparent. Don't really need any more films about men killing women, the mystery of why men kill women, the struggle of hard scrabble smart guys who like dropping vapid literary illusions against glamorous psychopaths who want to kill the women who should really be loving hard scrabble guy, and the lack of agency women have in any of these stories, etc. Should have noted it was based on hideous Murakami turd and stuck to my "murakami no way" creed.

Despite the endearing and courageous Babs, on the list of most depressing films  ever. A remarkable antithesis to the remarkable What's Up Doc.
