The Brutalist wants to be about a lot of things: subtlety vs. bluntness (the first half of the movie vs. the second, the Americans’ passive aggression vs. the Toths’ directness); which is more important the journey or the destination (despite what a certain character claims, the movie/filmmaking seems to say it’s the journey); the twisted nature of the American Dream; the past vs. the present; and more.
But, it’s most interested in one thing/question above all: who does art belong…
