Found Pattinson’s weirdness funny and thrilling in its commitment; meanwhile Ruffalo is doing a bad Trump impression. A representative divergence in this generally engaging but kind of drunkenly pitched movie. The comparisons it naturally draws to “Starship Troopers” do it no favors.

Zagar uses what I guess you could call a poetic visual style that is sometimes affecting and sometimes (too often) feels strained and precious. It's a movie that really wants to grab your heartstrings, and it's at its worst when it's trying its hardest.
Haven't read the book, though from the Q&A with Justin Torres afterwards, it sounds marginally more interesting — and a lot more queer — than this neutered, half-inspired memory play of a movie.
P.S. I feel like Rupi Kaur would like this? (That's not a compliment.)
